The game is a series of vast battles take players through a lengthy scenario as we pick up and play some of our favorite characters from the Breath of the Wild story. A ferocious battleĪt its core, Age of Calamity plays like any Musou game, but I will say that it plays like the most fleshed out and well-crafted Musou game I have ever seen. Except for mini-boss characters (moblins and above in Age Of Calamity) most enemies are completely ineffectual on normal difficulty, and usually stand around doing nothing as you slaughter them by the dozens. No matter what property is being licensed Omega Force’s games always work in the same basic way, with their long-standing gimmick being that you face off against hundreds of enemies at once on very large scale maps. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Switch Which means Zelda is still a wuss, Link doesn’t speak, and Revali is still an annoying braggart. And yet despite the large number of cut scenes (many of which seem to have been encoded in disappointingly low quality) most of the game events just mirror that of Breath Of The Wild, as you get the Divine Beasts ready for battle and recruit allies. Traditional Zelda games are always light on story and this was the perfect opportunity to introduce more complex characterisation and lore. About halfway through the game however, essentially all you are doing is fighting these big guys with hardly any small fry the franchise is known for in between. These enemies start off by giving the game a very Zelda flavor, with you having to use the correct Sheikah Slate Rune to expose their weak spot meter which, once depleted, allows you to deal massive damage. These varying objectives keep the game from getting repetitive for a time, but as the game progresses it feels like every mission will have you taking on several powerful foes one after another which gets tiring fast. Missions in AoC are thankfully varied, you may be capturing bases in one mission then making your way through a maze-like forest in the next. If you’ve played a Warriors or Muso style game before, you know exactly what to expect here: slaughtering enemies by the hundreds (sometimes thousands) as you cut through the battlefield towards your next objective. I would have liked to see this expand upon those moments shown in the previous game, but the interactions we do get to see are fun enough. Unfortunately Link and Zelda’s relationship is glossed over almost entirely here, the two are instantly inseparable for no real reason and there aren’t any moments of resentment before they come to understand each other like in BotW. It’s nice seeing the characters interact with each other in a big group, since there was only a flashback or two like that in BotW. The story presented here is surprisingly good, with some unexpected twists and turns. A far smaller version than the large, laser-spewing ones we’re used to, it leaps through a hole in time just as Calamity Ganon is making itself cozy on the castle. Age of Calamity picks up with a wrinkle to that story in the form of a little spider-legged robot known as a Guardian. Those who know The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will know it begins after Calamity Ganon took over Hyrule Kingdom when Link and Zelda were unable to defeat it one hundred years prior to the events of BotW, forcing Link into a century-long rest.
